A version of this post was originally published on the 12th of July 2024, in a private newsletter to my Kickstarter backers. I’m now making all the updates available to the public, so you can see how I create my comic books.
Hi all and Happy Friday!
I’ll spare you the weather talk this week because it’s depressing, and dive right in. 🌧️ I’m starting to draw this book, and I’m getting chills down my spine. It’s the fourth chapter, and we’re past the middle line (it rhymed and it’s okay).
Which brings us to the title of this email: the splendid opening sketch.
I briefly considered leaving it like this instead of drawing. Maybe the new chapter could be a collection of sketchy emojis, and that’s it sorted. It would be fun, but it didn’t happen, so here’s the first sketch of that page, so you can try and guess what’s coming:
I also spent a few hours creating a character design sheet for Carol, so I’d have an example of character development to add to my portfolio.
I used this as an excuse for practising a different technique for shading and doing lines that has slightly more realistic-looking results. I quite like it, but need more practice! I also see more than a few anatomy issues looking at it now, but I’ll do better next time. 😅
I hope you’re all doing well, and wish you an excellent weekend!
Claudia
